Kolkata Creates History on Mahalaya Morning

In a remarkable collective artistic endeavour, 10–12 children at a time painted the monumental wall, transforming the 250-foot canvas into a vibrant expression of Bengal’s greatest festival. The extraordinary artwork emerged as a powerful symbol of inclusion and collective expression, with children with special abilities taking centre stage as artists and creators. For the children, the wall was not simply a canvas. It became a space where imagination had no boundaries, creativity had no limitations and every brushstroke told a story.

Debasish Saha, Chief Patron, Salt Lake BC Block Residents Association Durga Puja 2026, said:“Celebrating 50 years of BC Block Durga Puja is not just about honouring a glorious legacy; it is about reaffirming the values that bring our community together. This Mahalaya, the 250-foot-long hand-painted art wall created by our children, including children with special abilities, reflects the true spirit of Durga Puja—unity, compassion, creativity and inclusiveness. We wanted our Golden Jubilee to stand for something more meaningful than a celebration; we wanted it to send a message that every child has the power to inspire, every ability deserves recognition, and every individual belongs. As we welcome Maa Durga, this initiative is our humble tribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society.”

A 250-Foot Canvas of Inclusion

The initiative carried a message far beyond the world of art. It celebrated the simple yet profound belief that every child deserves the opportunity to create, participate and be recognised for their abilities. The participation of nearly 50 children with special abilities gave the celebration a deeply emotional dimension. Their colours, imagination and individual expressions came together to create one collective work of art.

Every brushstroke became a voice.

Every colour became an expression.

And the 250-foot wall became a celebration of inclusion.

50 Years of BC Block Durga Puja — A New Chapter

For five decades, BC Block Durga Puja, Salt Lake, West Bengal, has been an integral part of the cultural and community life of Salt Lake. Its Golden Jubilee is not merely a celebration of a milestone, but an opportunity to honour a five-decade legacy while embracing the values of a more inclusive and compassionate future.

This landmark year is also being celebrated through the evocative theme “Jiyon Kanthi” (জিয়নকাঠি), which draws upon the symbolism of life, revival and renewal. The theme reflects the enduring relationship between nature, human civilisation and collective memory, reminding society that nature is not merely a resource to be consumed, but a living legacy that must be protected and passed on to future generations. Through Jiyon Kanthi, BC Block Durga Puja seeks to inspire reflection on environmental responsibility and the preservation of life. The theme lends a deeper meaning to the Golden Jubilee, connecting 50 years of cultural heritage with a renewed commitment to humanity, nature and a sustainable future.

The choice of Mahalaya morning made the occasion even more significant. As Bengal awakened to the timeless invocation of Mahishasura Mardini and prepared to welcome Maa Durga, the children painted their own celebration of the Divine Mother through colour, creativity, hope and togetherness.

The 250-foot-long artwork thus became more than a wall.

It became a canvas of Bengal’s collective spirit.

A canvas where children of different abilities painted together.

A canvas where tradition met a new generation.

A canvas where inclusion became visible.

A Golden Jubilee That Belongs to Everyone

The Golden Jubilee of BC Block Durga Puja, Salt Lake, has created a memorable chapter in the community’s five-decade journey, bringing together the celebration of a cherished cultural tradition and a powerful message of inclusion.

Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of this celebration was that history was not created by a single artist, but by children working together, expressing themselves through colours and imagination.

Fifty years of Durga Puja.

Sixty young artists.

Nearly fifty children with special abilities.

Two hundred and fifty feet of imagination.

One extraordinary message of inclusion.

This Mahalaya, BC Block did not simply celebrate the arrival of Maa Durga. It created a celebration in which every child had a place, every ability found expression and every brushstroke became a reminder that the true spirit of a festival lies in bringing people together.

As BC Block Durga Puja enters its Golden Jubilee year, the 250-foot art wall stands as a lasting tribute to the belief that tradition becomes truly timeless when it embraces humanity, celebrates every child and creates space for everyone.
