Exclusive: Why PV Sindhu Wore Zomato Founder Deepinder Goyal’s ‘Temple’ Device While Playing

The city of Horsens, located on Denmark’s eastern coast, has been famous for hosting hundreds of sports and cultural events every year. But this time, during the badminton team world championships – the Thomas and Uber Cups – the focus has especially been on double Olympic medalist P. V. Sindhu. There is considerable discussion around the ‘temple’ on Sindhu’s forehead, and a debate about it has gone viral on social media.

In her first Uber Cup match, P. V. Sindhu defeated 26-year-old home player Line Christophersen in a three-game contest, winning 21-13, 18-21, 21-17. The big highlight was that Sindhu won the match by coming back from 12-15 in the deciding game.

Is there any immediate benefit from the ‘temple’ Sindhu is using? In a recent exclusive interview with NDTV, Sindhu said, “I want to play the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. I will try my best to ensure that my fitness and my game continue to improve and remain strong until the next Olympics.”

What is Sindhu’s device – the ‘temple’?

Speaking exclusively to NDTV, Sindhu’s husband and her biggest support, Venkata Datta Sai, said, “This is a device that tracks her metrics. We are currently testing it and reviewing the results. The initial results are extremely encouraging.”

P. V. Sindhu and Venkata Datta Sai got married about a year and a half ago, in December 2024. Venkata is the Executive Director of Tata Mining company Posidex. During an exclusive NDTV interview, Sindhu had said, “Even though he (Venkata) may not have technical knowledge of badminton, he keeps trying to learn and understand the game. He definitely wants to be involved. He is technically very strong and wants to be associated with the game in a technical way. I am sure I can benefit from that.”

Why is the ‘temple’ special – will it bring a revolution to sports?

The ‘temple’, developed by Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal, is currently in the testing phase, during which data is being collected by closely monitoring Sindhu’s metrics. It is a wearable device. Sindhu wore it for the first time in an Uber Cup match against host nation player Line Christophersen. It enables real-time monitoring of blood flow in the forehead, providing continuous feedback about the player – that is, Sindhu. It also tracks Sindhu’s cognition and development.

At present, it is difficult to assess how much impact this will have on performance. However, its objective is clearly to improve performance. Currently, Sindhu has started using it, but if this experiment proves successful, it won’t take long for it to find a place in other sports as well.

The device is about 1 inch long and does not use Bluetooth. According to a report, once worn, it can be used for 3-4 hours. Currently, the device is not available for sale. But if the experiment with Sindhu proves successful, it could bring a different kind of revolution to the world of sports.

Thirty-year-old Sindhu, a double Olympic medalist and winner of five World Championship medals including one gold, posted a photo wearing the ‘temple’ on her forehead after winning her singles and women’s doubles matches. She wrote, “Two matches within two hours. Must-win matches. And my body is gently telling me that I’m not 19 anymore. Extremely happy to win both matches for India.”
